Recalled MTD Snow Throwers Still Being Used

Despite the fact that the CSPC and MTD announced the recall of over 130,000 snow throwers back in 2006, we are seeing that many of the recalled snow blowers are still being used.

Consumers who have not received notice of the recall or who have not returned their snow throwers are using them this winter season, and some are being injured when overinflated tires cause the plastic wheel rims to burst.

As of the original recall date of October 5th 2006, the CSPC had received reports of 16 injuries, but that number is climbing higher as consumers continue to use the snow throwers/blowers unaware of the dangers they pose.

The defective snow throwers were sold under the Troy-Bilt, Yard Machines and Craftsman brands. Consumers can find the model numbers on the rear frame to find out if they are using one of the recalled machines.

If you purchased a Troy-Bilt, Yard Machines or Craftsman snow blower / snow thrower between July 2004 and July 2006, it is important to check the model number to ensure it is not a machine that has been recalled. An exploding tire poses the threat of severe injury including, but not limited to lacerations and fractures.

Remedy: Consumers should contact MTD for a free service kit with pressure relief valves, labels and instructions. Consumers with Craftsman brand snow throwers will be mailed a service kit directly by Sears.

Consumer Contact: For more information, contact MTD toll-free at (888) 848-6038 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's Web site at www.mtdproducts.com

Lack of MTD Snow Thrower Recall Notice For Exploding Tires

In October 2006, a recall was issued for MTD snow throwers. However, some consumers have not received notice and are unaware of the recall. The affected product is the Two Stage Compact Snow Thrower, manufactured by MTD Products, Inc., of Cleveland, Ohio. The machines were sold under the brand names of Craftsman, Troy-built and Yard. The danger of the MTD snow throwers is that inflating the tires can cause the tire to explode with strong force, causing serious injuries, including broken bones and facial injuries. Consumers should check the information on their snow thrower to determine whether it is an MTD snow thrower that is affected by the recall.
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jamie Sheller

Wheel Rims Can Burst and Cause Injury on Recalled MTD Snow Throwers

In 2006 the CSPC and MTD announced a recall of around 130,000 snow throwers sold under the Troy-Bilt, Craftsman and Yard Machines brands. An issue with tire pressure resulted in some plastic wheel rims bursting and injuring consumers when the tires were overinflated.

As of the recall date, the manufacturer had received reports of 16 injuries, but we are finding that the recall notice did not reach all consumers, and many snow throwers are still in use today. Customers still using the snow throwers should contact MTD for further instructions. If you have been injured by one of these machines, it may also be important to contact an attorney and protect your legal rights.

The recalled snow throwers were as follows:
