Are your denture cleansers making you sick?

The FDA recently issued a warning to patients and dentist alike, that some denture cleansers are causing severe reactions in consumers. Apparently, the ingredient persulfate, that helps with the bleaching and cleansing process, is known to cause allergic reactions. These allergic reactions include irritation, tissue damage, rash, hives, gum tenderness, breathing problems, and low blood pressure. Some people who unknowingly misused the product by gargling it, swallowing or chewing the cleansers, experienced even worse reactions. There was even a report of one death.

If you or a loved one has been injured by a dangerous product, contact Sheller PC. We have a team of experienced trial lawyers who can assist you with your legal rights.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jamie Sheller

Harmful Eye Product Seized

Over 12,000 Tubes of Age Intervention Eyelash Product were seized by U.S. Marshalls this week. The eye product was promoted to increase eyelash growth. Jan Marini Skin Research, Inc. of San Jose, California sold and distributed the product. Although Age Intervention Eyelash product can be purchased without a prescription, it contained active ingredients that required FDA approval to market. The FDA recommends that consumers or doctors who may still have Age Intervention Eyelash discontinue using it and discard any remaining product. The active ingredients could increase the risk of optic nerve damage or decrease effectiveness of other medications. In addition, the product may cause swelling fo the retina, and inflammation of the eye, which may lead to decreased vision. To learn more about this seizure visit:http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01746.html

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jamie Sheller

Possible Link Between Food Dyes and Preservatives and Hyperactivity

A recent study has found that some artificial food dyes and preservatives may be linked to increased hyperactivity in children. The study used drink mixtures containing the preservative sodium benzoate, along with common food dyes. Children fed those mixtures had increased hyperactivity scores compared with those who were given a placebo drink. The study looked at a group of three-year olds and a group of eight and nine-year olds. Increased hyperactivity was found in both groups, when given the mixture of preservative and food dyes. According to the investigation, behavioral effects of food additives can occur in as little as one hour. The results of the study were reported online in The Lancet. The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial, and its results lend support to the argument that food additives exacerbate children's hyperactive behavior.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to the section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jamie Sheller

Fresh Spinach Recalled Due to Salmonella

Metz Fresh LLC has recalled its fresh bagged spinach after a positive test for salmonella. The spinach involved in this recall have been distributed in both retail and food service packages throughout 48 states and Canada. There have been no reports of illness linked to this spinach, but a sample from the product line tested positive for salmonella and Metz, a California company, recalled all of the spinach packed that day. Salmonella can cause abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration. The recent spinach recall comes almost a year after fresh spinach was recalled due to E. coli contamination. Last year's E. coli spinach outbreak killed three people and sickened more than 200. It was traced to Natural Selections, another California company, and resulted in increased inspections by California health officials.

For more information on this subject matter please refer to the section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jamie Sheller

Potato Salad Recalled By Kroger

Kroger's store-brand "Southern Style" and "Mustard" style potato salads are being recalled. The company is recalling the potato salads due to concerns of E. coli contamination. E. coli is a bacteria that can cause intestinal illness and other problems. Testing of some potato salads by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, showed positive results for E. coli. However, no illnesses have been reported and additional analysis by a third-party laboratory came back negative. Kroger Co., based in Cincinnati, is urging customers not to eat the potato salads with a "best if used by" date of Sept. 5. Kroger stores are in 31 states, many under different names.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to the section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jamie Sheller

New Warnings Recommended for Sunscreens

Sunscreen has long been advocated to protect people from the damaging effects of the sun. Recently, the FDA called for new warnings and information to be included on sunscreen labels. The two kinds of rays from the sun are ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB). Sunscreens have standard ratings for protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. However, the suggested new labels would include information about UVA rays, which cause tanning, as well as a warning about skin cancer. According to the FDA, both types of UV rays lead to increased risk of skin cancer. Further, sun exposure leads to skin damage and premature aging. Under the proposed new rule, companies would not be required to test for UVA protection, but if they did not, then their label must indicate that the product does not offer UVA protection. In addition to the UVA information, under the new rule, the FDA could certify SPF ratings of up to 50, which is an increase from the maximum of 30 that it could certify on current labels. The SPF rating indicates the amount of UVB protection.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to the section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jamie Sheller

FDA Warning About Children and OTC Cold Medicines

Parents are warned about the risks of giving OTC cough and cold medications to young children. The FDA says that parents should not give such medicines to children younger than two years old. According to the FDA's Public Health Advisory, there are serious questions about whether the risks of these products outweigh the benefits in young children. Earlier this year, a group of pediatricians and public health authorities sought to halt marketing of OTC cough and cold medicines to children younger than six, due to uncertainty about safety and efficacy of the products. Three infant deaths had been linked to three ingredients commonly used in OTC cough and cold medicines. The three ingredients are pseudoephedrine, dextromethorphan and acetaminophen. On October 18, the FDA will hold an advisory panel meeting, where findings will be presented about the safety and efficacy of specific cough and cold medication ingredients.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to the section on Drugs, Medical Devices, and Implants.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jamie Sheller

FDA Issues Warning About Raw Oysters

The FDA has issued a warning to consumers about eating raw oysters. Only raw oysters are involved in the warning, not properly cooked oysters. The warning was prompted by reports of vibriosis in Washington State and California, linked to raw oysters harvested from a bed off the coast of Washington State. Though the known reports of vibriosis came from California and Washington State, oysters from the bed in question were also distributed in New York, Hawaii, Oregon, Idaho, Florida, British Columbia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore. Vibriosis is an infection caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The infection can cause symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, chills and fever. According to the FDA, generally the symptoms of vibriosis occur within 24 hours of ingestion and last a few days. However, people with weakened immune systems may contract a more severe disease. The FDA recommends that those with weakened immune systems should not eat raw oysters, regardless of where they were harvested.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to the section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jamie Sheller
