Intra-articular pain pumps deliver pain medicine directly into surgical sites, such as shoulders. Medications such as lidocaine and bupivacaine are delivered via an implanted disposable device. According to studies, patients using intra-articular shoulder pain pumps are at risk for developing postarthroscopic glenhumeral chondrolysis (PAGCL). With PAGCL, damage and destruction of cartilage in the shoulder joint occur. PAGCL results in pain and limited range of motion. While the symptoms of PAGCL can be treated, corrective action usually requires a shoulder replacement. Intra-articular pain pumps are made by several manufacturers, including Stryker, DJO Inc., I-Flow Inc., and BREG Inc.
