Consumers have been advised to stop using certain Zicam cold remedies. Matrixx Initiatives is the maker of Zicam. According to the FDA, certain Zicam products have been linked to anosmia, the loss of sense of smell, which can possibly be permanent. The three products at issue are Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swab, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size (a discontinued product). Over 130 reports of anosmia linked to Zicam, have been received by the FDA. Many of these people reported losing their sense of smell after the first dose. However, others reported that their loss of smell occurred after multiple uses. Loss of sense of smell is serious and can have an adverse impact on a person's quality of life. It can also be dangerous if a person can't smell gas or smoke. Given the seriousness of anosmia, the FDA is advising people not to use these Zicam products for any reason. The FDA issued a warning letter to Matrixx, saying that agency approval is required to market the Zicam products.
