Link Between Flomax and Cataract Surgery Complications

According to a recent study, Flomax, a popular drug used to treat urinary problems, has been linked to serious complications following cataract surgery in older men. Men with enlarged prostates use Flomax to relieve urinary problems. The drug works by relaxing muscles in the bladder and prostate. However, it may also cause a condition called floppy iris syndrome, by relaxing a muscle in the iris of the eye.

The study has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. An editorial accompanying the article suggests that a "black box" warning should be considered for the Flomax label. According to the study, older men taking Flomax have double the risk of serious complications after cataract surgery, compared with those not taking Flomax. Some of the complications include retinal detachment and a lost lens. Patients using Flomax should inform their doctors if they are considering cataract surgery.
