Following its review of suicide risks with the use of antidepressants, the FDA is planning broader warnings for the labels of those drugs. "Antidepressants increase the risk of suicidal behavior for people up to age 24." In addition to the new warnings, the FDA urges careful monitoring of all antidepressant users. There was split reaction to the news, with some doctors believing that increased warnings will scare away people who really need the drugs. "They warned that people with untreated depression--about half of those who suffer from the disease--face an estimated 15 percent greater likelihood of death by suicide." Others believe that the expanded warnings are overdue, saying that "expanding the warnings wouldn't scare off patients, but instead would allow them to make informed choices."
