Recently, there was a renewed recall of log splitters by Brave Products, Inc. of Streator, Ill. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, the renewed recall was prompted by a hand amputation that may have been caused by a defective cylinder in the log splitter. The affected log splitters are steel with trailer hitches and rubber tires. They are painted either orange and black or blue and black, with either a Brave Products decal or an Iron & Oak decal on the side. The affected log splitters were sold at Ace, True Value and Do It Best hardware stores, as well as independent power equipment dealers, from January 2002 through April 2007. The recalled log splitters might have defective rod retention in their hydraulic cylinders, which could lead to detachment of the rods. In February 2005, Brave Products recalled 4,000 log splitters, and in July 2007, 8,000 log splitters were recalled. However, there have been 26 additional reports of failure, even in some units not involved in the previous recalls.
