Bausch & Lomb permanently recalled its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution. According to the company's CEO, the recall is worldwide and the product will not be reintroduced. Recently ReNu with MoistureLoc had been linked to a rising number of U.S. infections with the fusarium keratitis fungus, and Bausch & Lomb halted shipment of the product.

As of May 12, 2006, the Centers for Disease Control had confirmed 122 cases of fusarium keratitis infection in the U.S. Earlier in the year, Baush & Lomb halted sales of ReNu with MoistureLoc in Singapore and Hong Kong following reports there of fusarium keratitis infections. Infection with the fungus could lead to corneal damage and blindness. In a recent statement, the Bausch & Lomb CEO indicated that the chemical formula for MoistureLoc could be connected to an increased risk of infection. The FDA has said that current data does not suggest a problem with other Bausch & Lomb contact lens solutions. Other Baush & Lomb solutions, including ReNu MultiPlus and ReNu Multi-Purpose will remain on the market. See more information on the Bausch & Lomb recall.
