The ConAgra Foods plant in Sylvester, Georgia, was inspected by company and government scientists. They were trying to find the cause of the salmonella contamination that led to a peanut butter recall. The Peter Pan brand and some of Walmart's Great Value brand were linked to a nationwide outbreak of salmonella cases, and those brands of peanut butter was recalled. The plant in Sylvester, Georgia is one of the nation's largets peanut butter plants, and since the recall the plant has been shut down. Salmonella is a dangerous bacteria that generally comes from the feces of birds and animals. Officials have indicated that dirty jars or equipment may be a possible cause of the contamination. No problems were found in the FDA's last inspection of the plant in February 2005.
