The FDA has issued a warning to consumers about eating raw oysters. Only raw oysters are involved in the warning, not properly cooked oysters. The warning was prompted by reports of vibriosis in Washington State and California, linked to raw oysters harvested from a bed off the coast of Washington State. Though the known reports of vibriosis came from California and Washington State, oysters from the bed in question were also distributed in New York, Hawaii, Oregon, Idaho, Florida, British Columbia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore. Vibriosis is an infection caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The infection can cause symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, chills and fever. According to the FDA, generally the symptoms of vibriosis occur within 24 hours of ingestion and last a few days. However, people with weakened immune systems may contract a more severe disease. The FDA recommends that those with weakened immune systems should not eat raw oysters, regardless of where they were harvested.
