In 2008, hundreds of thousands of infants in China were sickened with kidney stones and urinary tract problems, and at least six died, after using tainted baby formula and milk products. The milk had been contaminated with melamine, a chemical used in laminates, wood adhesives, ceiling tiles and flame retardants. The chemical was added to the milk at several Chinese dairy plants, in order to make the milk appear to have a higher protein level. Recently, three people were sentenced to death, and several others received life sentences for their roles in the tainted milk scandal. Those who were tried, included several executives of one of the main distributors of the tainted milk, and middlemen who sold the melamine to milking stations. The 22 Chinese dairy producers that made the milk, will provide financial compensation to the families of sickened children.
