Less than two weeks after canned meat products were recalled due to reports of botulism, the FDA has recalled green beans because of fears of botulism toxin. The product at issue in this recall is 14.5 ounce cans of French cut green beans manufactured by Lakeside Foods Inc. of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Though there had been no reports of botulism linked to the beans as of August 1, the product has been pulled from store shelves. The green beans involved in the recall are sold under several different labels, and consumers who have the affected product in their homes are urged to dispose of it immediately. Botulism toxin can cause a potentially life-threatening illness. Its symptoms include dry mouth, slurred speech, double vision, blurred vision, paralysis of the breathing muscles and muscle weakness progressing from the upper body to the lower extremities.
